Vadodara: A 5km radius around two neighbourhoods of Umreth town in Anand district has been declared “cholera-affected”. The Anand district collectorate on Tuesday issued a notification declaring a 5km radius around Kajiwad and Khaktiwad areas of Umreth city “cholera-affected”. The notification under the Epidemic Diseases Act was issued after two residents of Umreth were found to have cholera.

It is effective for one month. Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It can cause severe diarrhoea, dehydration and can prove fatal if untreated.

An advisory has been issued telling residents to have only freshly cooked food and drink only chlorinated or clean potable water. Health teams have been asked to carry out preventive measures in the villages of Thamna, Lingda, Hamidpura, Bharoda, Ratanpura, Gangapura, Bechari, Bhatpura, Navapura, Sureli, Dhuleta and Parvata near Umreth town.
