Sequels are rarely better than their originals, but a South Korean blockbuster that bucks the trend, and tackles pressing social issues in thrilling fashion, is in Hong Kong cinemas this weekend. So, too, is a passionate homage to the city’s filmmaking tradition. Another solid sequel, this time animated, can be streamed, as can a Hollywood comedy thriller with two big-name male stars.
For K-drama fans there is an enjoyable legal show that mixes fantasy and comedy. Upping the stakes from the first instalment in nearly every department, I, the Executioner is a crowd-pleasing juggernaut that warns against the perils of populism, takes violence to task and brings viewers on a white-knuckle roller-coaster ride. I, the Executioner opens in cinemas today.
