Thiruvananthapuram: At least three registered vehicle scrapping facilities will come up in the state, and one of them will be set up by KSRTC in association with Braithwaite and Co Ltd , a central public sector undertaking under the ministry of railways. The state govt will invite open tenders for setting up the other two scrapping units. An earlier move by the state govt to monopolise the business by anointing KSRTC as the registered vehicle scrapping unit implementing agency was scrapped by the high court.
Following the court order, the govt decided to grant permission to a joint venture unit by KSRTC and invite an open tender from competent agencies for setting up the other two scrapping units. The KSRTC has been given permission to set up its scrapping unit at any of its depots with available land. The commercial viability of the project will be a key factor when KSRTC ventures into the new business.
The HC, in its order, has directed the govt to follow rules and procedures strictly and ensure a level playing field for all players competent and interested in setting up and operating the registered vehicle scrapping units by strictly adhering to the conditions laid down by the Union ministry of road transport and highways. The Union ministry had notified the scrappage policy in 2021, and the state govt too had duly adopted the same. As per the notification, the state should set up vehicle scrapping facility units in different regions.
