Pune: Two men stole gold jewellery worth Rs93,000 from a 70-year-old woman on Monday under the pretext of helping her get free ration. The woman has filed a complaint with the Chinchwad police and a case under section 303 (theft) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered. An officer said the woman and her daughter were selling coconuts and running a stall near Chapekar Chowk.

On Sunday afternoon, when the woman was alone at the stall, two men approached her and told her that someone was distributing ration for free to needy people. “They requested her to go along with them so they could help her get the ration and also asked her to remove her jewellery on the way. She removed her jewellery worth Rs 93,000 and kept it in a bag, that the duo pretended to keep safe,” an officer said.

When she reached the chowk, she did not find anyone distributing ration. The duo had also escaped by then. “After returning to her stall, she checked her bag and found her jewellery was missing,” the officer added.
