Pune: An assistant police inspector (API) in the city sufeered serious head injuries in an attack with a billhook by two men with criminal antecedents in Sasanenagar of Hadapsar, around 4pm on Sunday. The injured API of the Wanowrie police, Ratnadip Gaikwad, was admitted to a private hospital in the area. His condition was reported as stable.

Deputy commissioner of police (Zone V) R Raja told TOI, “Gaikwad was patrolling the area on his motorcycle and in police uniform. Two bike riders were involved in a dispute in Sasanenagar over some issue. The two assailants, who attacked Gaikwad, were supporting one of these riders.

They were brandishing a billhook.” He added, “Gaikwad decided to resolve their issue, suspecting that the armed duo might assault the other motorcycle rider. He parked his vehicle and went to the quarreling parties.

He tried to grab the billhook, which led to a scuffle between the duo and Gaikwad. The duo then assaulted Gaikwad with the billhook. Gaikwad collapsed on the spot, and the duo ran away from the spot, leaving behind the billhook.

” The DCP added, “We have identified the two assailants, aged 18 and 19 years, and they both are residents of Hadapsar. Our team is searching for them.”’ The duo has been booked in over 10 cases of attempt to murder, theft, rioting, and other serious offences previously.
