Pune: A 13-year-old boy on Thursday drowned in a quarry filled with water in the urban forest garden on a hillock at Ramnagar in Warje Malwadi . The Pune fire brigade traced the victim’s body at midnight and sent it for post-mortem. A case of accidental death was registered with the Warje Malwadi police.

An officer from the Warje Malwadi police said on Thursday afternoon the victim, Daksh Kamble of Ramnagar, and his three friends had entered the quarry for a swim. “The boy, a Standard VII student of a govt school at Shivane near Warje Malwadi, lost his breath while swimming and drowned,” he said. He said the victim’s terrified friends left the spot and did not inform anyone about the incident.

“When the boy did not return home till late evening, his parents started searching for him. When they contacted his friends, the latter told them about the incident,” he said. The officer said after getting the information, the police and the fire brigade were alerted.

“Rescue teams carried out searches in the quarry till in the night, but the boy could not be traced. The water in the quarry was about 10 feet deep. A diver was summoned late in the night, who traced the body around midnight,” he said.
