Pune: The Samarth police have arrested 39-year-old Arvind Chavan from Daund in rural Pune and recovered 10 vehicles which were stolen from areas in the vicinity of Pune railway station and Somwar Peth since March. Sub-inspector Sunil Randive on Tuesday said Chavan travelled by train from Daund to Pune and worked as a sanitation staffer in a lodge outside the railway station during the night. He stole scooters and bikes by using master keys and drove back to Daund.
Randive said Chavan’s identity was established in the series of vehicle thefts after his images were captured on CCTV cameras. The police chased and intercepted him after he was found riding a stolen vehicle at Somwar Peth on August 1. Chavan, during questioning, told the police that after stealing vehicles, he gave them to known persons in Daund and asked for nominal money.
He promised to return the money and collect the vehicles, but that never happened, he said. He was lodged in magisterial custody at the Yerawada jail, added the police officer.
