If Kamala Harris wins the 2024 US Presidential elections against Republican candidate Donald Trump, she will become the first woman to become POTUS. Harris is already the first woman, the first African American, and the first Asian American to be vice president. While the results of the US elections will only be known post-voting on November 5, did you know that a 1924 silent film had already envisioned a woman holding top office at the White House? While in reality, one has to wait to see if Kamala Harris does manage to become the 47th president of the United States, the 1924 silent film The Last Man on Earth is one of the earliest films to portray a female president of the United States.

A silent comedy film by John G Blystone, based on a short story by John D Swain, the film had Earle Foxe in the lead role. The film is one of the earliest surviving on-screen examples of a woman in that role. In the film, Foxe stars as Elmer, the sole adult male in the year 1954 who has survived a disease known as ‘masculitis’ that has killed off any men over the age of 14.

Fortunately for Elmer, he was living in isolation in a forest when the virus hit. Once brought back to civilization, he becomes a coveted specimen (being the last man on Earth), and the government offers $10 million for him. Two female senators engage in a boxing match for the chance to marry him, but Elmer’s heart remains with his childhood sweetheart.
