T he America’s Cup trophy, affectionately known as the Auld Mug, is so large and valuable it flies in its very own business class seat. And like many of its fellow passengers at the pointy end of the plane, it is clad head to toe in Louis Vuitton. The French maison crafted the huge trunk the Auld Mug travels the world in and returns this year as the title partner of the America’s Cup, maintaining an association with the event that stretches back to 1983.

The grand sailing occasion kicks off today in Barcelona and concludes with a final match race starting on October 12. It’s the sailing world’s biggest jamboree and this year six teams and their billionaire backers are vying for the chance to book that business class seat home for the world’s oldest sporting trophy..
