A CITY overlooking the water is easy to mistake for a colorful Italian town. Located along the water, the homes resemble classic Venetian abodes. Capitola, California resort is the oldest in the Golden State.
Nestled oceanfront on the Pacific, it looks like a scene straight out of Italy. The colorful homes are striking and have been around for a century. It was previously branded a summer camp in the 1800s, later turning into the resort it is now.

German native Frederick Hihn came to Capitola during California's Gold Rush. While the origins of the city's name are not certain, it is speculated that his daughter Lulu chose the name Capitola after the heroine of popular novels at the time.
The city was later sold to San Francisco's Henry Allen Rispin who revamped it until his bankruptcy in 1929.
