Wednesday, January 22, 2025 American Express Global Business Travel (Amex GBT) has launched a new emissions-based carbon pricing platform aimed at helping businesses reduce their CO 2 footprint from corporate travel. The initiative aligns with global sustainability efforts and enables clients to integrate carbon accountability into their travel management strategies. The platform allows Amex GBT clients to select from various carbon calculation methodologies, enabling them to apply either a flat or dynamic carbon fee to employee air travel.

These fees are prominently displayed during the booking process and can also appear on travel invoices. This visibility supports corporate sustainability goals by informing travelers of their carbon impact and encouraging environmentally conscious travel decisions. According to Amex GBT, the funds generated from carbon fees can be channeled into a self-sustaining fund dedicated to financing sustainability projects.

These initiatives include investments in alternative sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), electric vehicles and ongoing research and development in green technologies. John Sturino, Senior Vice President of Product and Engineering at Amex GBT, emphasized the potential impact of the platform: “Carbon pricing is a proven mechanism that can help companies progress towards their sustainability objectives.
