Martin Freeman admitted that his split from Amanda Abbington took the fun out of filming Sherlock. The actor explained he and Amanda were in the "midst of splitting up" while they were filming the last series of Sherlock. Speaking on Desert Island Discs on Radio 4, back in 2019, Martin revealed that "by the time of the last Sherlock that we've done we were sort of in the midst of splitting up, so that wasn't that much fun, but when we weren't in that midst it was great".

He added: “I really love working with her.” Martin and Amanda played John and Mary Watson in the BBC hit drama which saw Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead role. The former couple met on the set of Channel 4 drama Men Only in 2000 and have remained friends since their break-up.

“I wanted to be civil for us,” Martin said, “because when you’ve loved someone for that long and they have been such an integral part of your life, what – that is supposed to not count now?” Martin revealed the former couple now co-parent "pretty well, really". Meanwhile, Amanda – who is currently embroiled in an "abuse" scandal with the BBC over her time on the show – previously opened up on how she struggle in the aftermath of her split from the father of her two children.
