The episode began with Tristan assisting his brother Siegfried with on-call visits, leaving James Herriot in charge at the practice. However, it soon became apparent that James was not himself, as he started getting names wrong and acting strangely.

When speaking to Mrs. Pumphrey about her dog Tricki Woo, James began sweating profusely, complained about the heat, and started rambling incoherently. His wife Helen intervened, taking him upstairs, where it was revealed that his temperature was over 100, and he continued to mutter nonsense in bed.



Although Helen attributed his condition to brucellosis, it was clear that something more was troubling him.
