The “Alien” franchise returned to screens this Summer with “Alien: Romulus,” Fede Alvarez’s cost-effective $80 million take on the property with a story set between Scott & Cameron’s original films. The film was a success for the studio, taking in $350.8 million worldwide and received positive reviews overall – not bad for a film originally planned as a streaming release.

As a result, 20th Century Studios chief Steve Asbell has revealed a follow-up is in the works. In a lengthy new interview with , Asbell was asked what’s the next step for the “Alien” franchise after this. He explains they’re “working on a sequel idea now” and goes on to indicate it will be a direct follow-up which continues with the survivors of ‘Romulus’: “We haven’t quite closed our deal with Fede [Alvarez], but we are going to, and he has an idea that we’re working on.

The two survivors, Rain and Andy, played by Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson, were real highlights of the film. And so I always think of it like, “Wow, where do people want to see them go next?” We know there’s going to be aliens. We know there’s going to be great horror set pieces.

But I fell in love with both of them and I want to see what their story is.” Before that happens we’re getting Noah Hawley’s “Alien: Earth” TV series which has already been shot and will arrive on FX next year..
