A panel of experts has taste-tested mince pies from the UK's biggest supermarkets - and a £4 packet from Waitrose has come out on top. The supermarket's No.1 Brown Butter Mince Pies with Cognac dazzled the Which? judges, receiving praise for their "lovely pastry, an enticing aroma and generous nut, spice and citrus filling, with a subtle boozy warmth".
On sale for £4 for six, which works out at 67p each, the Waitrose mince pies even received a Best Buy recommendation from Which?. Aldi's Specially Selected Mince Pies also won over the panel with their "great buttery taste, snowflake design and tasty filling packed with fruit and spices". Aldi's mince pies were one of the best bargains among those tested, costing £2.
29 for six, only 38p per pie, earning them the Which? Great Value endorsement, reports the Mirror . Best Buy award, still received favourable remarks. M&S Collection Mince Pies, on sale at £4 for six, featured a "generous filling and golden pastry", although one judge remarked they could do with more spice.
As for Iceland's Luxury All Butter Mince Pies, priced at £3 for a half dozen, their rich sultana and fruit fillings were praised, yet deemed "too dry and lacked in spice and flavour" by the experts.
