Doha: Al Wakrah coach Poya Asbaghi was in disbelief after missing out on a quarter-final spot in the AFC Champions League (ACL) Two 2024/25 despite showing dominance in both home and away matches against Saudi side Al Taawoun FC.
The Qatari side went down to Al Taawoun in a thrilling shootout after the scores read 2-2 at the end of added extra time on Wednesday.
“We were the stronger team in both matches.
After scoring first, we had a great chance to build on our lead but missed it. Then we gave Al Taawoun too much space, and they seized the opportunity,” Asbaghi said after the loss at the Wolves Park in Budaidah.
“We came here aiming for victory and did our best.
Congratulations to Al Taawoun,” he added.
On the other hand, Al Taawoun FC head coach Mohammed Al Abdali was delighted with his players’ performances.
Despite being reduced to ten men in the 26th minute, Al Taawoun battled back to equalise.
They came within moments of winning at the end of extra time, and then displayed unwavering composure in the penalty shootout. The second leg finished 2-2, producing a 4-4 tie on aggregate, and sending Al Taawoun through on penalties.
“The match was difficult by all standards, and the expulsion of Walid Al Ahmad made it even more challenging, but the players took responsibility,” Al Abdali said.
