Air New Zealand reveals the new way it will train crew to manage emergency situations. “Emergency! Brace!” the group of flight attendants yell out over and over again in perfect unison. Bending over, hugging my knees, I sneak a glance outside the window, where orange flames and black smoke billow past as we speed towards the landing strip at Auckland International Airport .

Smoke steadily fills the cabin, as the crew (now with high-vis vests and flashlights) calmly continue to call out instructions to brace. I have no clue what’s happening, but it doesn’t look good. After making a bumpy but safe landing, the confident, calm chant changes to “Stay! Seated!” as the crew stride around the aircraft opening the left-hand side doors, before firmly but kindly instructing us which doors to exit from.
