There was no doubt about the second one. Senior Corbet Hallberg scored two goals as Schalmont defeated Peru of Section 7 2-0 in the NYSPHSAA Class A subregionals at Bethlehem High School on Wednesday. His first one was fluky, but the second one was a thing of beauty, a rocket from outside the box that found the upper right corner with 11:45 left in the second half.
The Sabres (19-1) will take goals any way they come at this point in the season, as they advance to play the Franklin Academy-New Hartford winner at noon on Saturday at Waterford-Halfmoon High School. “Usually, with this team, it’s been like that all season, we’ll go 0-0 no matter how strong the opponent is, and it takes that first goal that really gets everybody going,” Schalmont head coach Vito Urbano said. “Once that went in, whatever kind of goal it is, you could just see the confidence with everybody.
I’ll take any goal at that point.” After a 0-0 first half, Schalmont began to exert strong pressure on the Peru box to start the second and was rewarded with a goal by Hallberg with 31:30 left that Nighthawks goalie Conner Perrotte had lined up for a save, but let it get through his hands and into the net. Hallberg hit a low shot that skidded along the ground toward the left post, and Perrotte had plenty of time to get in front of it.
“Oh, I don’t know. I have no idea. It was a miracle, honestly,” Hallberg said.
