Pune: The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) has launched a digital mammography centre dedicated to breast cancer screening. The facility was inaugurated by Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, the Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services, at the department of radiology. The centre has advanced screening machines designed to handle a large number of cases and produce comprehensive reports.
"The digital mammography machine, a cutting-edge diagnostic tool, is set to enhance detection and early diagnosis of breast cancer. It offers better image clarity, enabling clearer detection of small or subtle abnormalities. It uses lower radiation doses compared to conventional film mammography and allows for easier image storage, retrieval, and manipulation," a senior official from the AFMC told TOI.
"Digital images can be enhanced, magnified, and shared quickly, improving diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women, and this addition is expected to play a pivotal role in the ongoing efforts of Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) to provide world-class healthcare to service personnel, veterans, and families," the officer added. Regular screening for breast cancer helps identify tumours before symptoms appear, improving treatment outcomes.
Early detection can reduce mortality rates and is essential for timely intervention and better prognosis. "The new machine would contribute not only to early detection of breast cancer but also bolster A.
