Sodiq Ojuroungbe As Prof. Babatunde Salako exits the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research as the Director-General, some prominent Nigerians have lauded him for his exceptional service and contributions to the health sector. Former Minister of Health, Prof.

Isaac Adewole, described the appointment of Salako as the DG of NIMR as one of the best decisions made by former President Muhammadu Buhari. Speaking at the sendforth programme for the outgoing NIMR DG on Tuesday, Adewole commended the former president for making a decision that had yielded positive results for the institution and the healthcare sector. Adewole lauded the outgoing DG for his outstanding performance and transformation of NIMR.

He noted that Salako’s achievements were a testament to his vision, commitment, and leadership. The don highlighted Salako’s achievements, including the development of a strategic plan for NIMR, support for the fight against COVID-19, and introduction of innovative instruments and developments. He also commended him for prioritising the welfare of staff, saying it was a first in the history of NIMR.

He added, “We are celebrating in my picture a performer, a reformer. And again, today is your birthday. And I say happy birthday.

Long may you live on this planet. One of the few privileged to write your recommendation. I served as your vice-chancellor when you were provost and also as your minister for being appointed as DG of NIMR.

“I may go on to say that sometimes we criticise decisions made by our leaders. I may want to say publicly today that this is one of the best decisions that my boss, President Muhammadu Buhari made. “No one will fail to recognise the transformation Prof.

Salako has made. So, we need to praise you (Salako) for what you’ve done.” “Within a few weeks of your appointment, you came to Abuja and presented your strategic plan.

And so it was quite easy to recognise someone who has a vision, someone who is committed, and someone who wanted to make changes.” Also, a former Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, described Salako as a great mind and patriotic Nigerian. Fashola, who was the Chairman of the occasion, praised Salako for promoting medical research in the country through NIMR.

“I am truly delighted that although I do not have Salako’s scientific feat and knowledge, I am proud to share his first name. “He has championed the course of expanding the frontiers of medical and scientific research in the country and the establishment of NIMR foundation is also a testament of Salako’s efforts to promote translational research. “I am sure that this country is not done with him and we also need his scientific input in other areas,” he said.

Reflecting on his eight years as NIMR DG, Salako said one of the major successes of his administration was creating a conducive research environment that allowed researchers to thrive. He attributed this to the innovative approach of linking researchers with universities, enabling them to teach, supervise, and progress in their academic careers. This approach, Don noted, brought respect and visibility to the researchers, boosted their confidence, and ultimately transformed the institution.

He stated that improving human capacity was key to attracting funds, winning grants, and conducting innovative research that made NIMR a globally relevant and nationally competitive institution. Salako expressed his gratitude for the goodwill messages he received, saying they were a challenge to do more. Copyright PUNCH All rights reserved.
