Sunday, September 15, 2024 The Secretary of Tourism of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, successfully concluded a visit to the Netherlands, where he aimed to enhance air connectivity and tourism between the two countries. Accompanied by Mexico’s Ambassador to the Netherlands, H.E.

Ms. Carmen Moreno Toscano, the visit was part of the “Operación Toca Puertas” (Operation Knock on Doors) initiative, designed to increase tourist arrivals from the Netherlands and boost spending by Dutch visitors. The Embassy of Mexico organized a seminar titled “This is Mexico,” where Secretary Torruco presented Mexico’s tourism potential to over 100 Dutch tour operators and travel agents.

Highlighting the country’s rich tourism infrastructure, he discussed new projects such as the Mayan Train, Felipe Angeles International Airport, and Tulum Airport, which improve accessibility to 279 destinations across Mexico. Mexico’s cultural heritage, represented by its 177 Magical Towns, 35 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and archaeological wonders, was a focal point of the presentation. Representatives from various Mexican regions, including Chihuahua, Yucatán, La Paz, and Los Cabos, showcased their tourism attractions, while Aeroméxico’s Country Manager, Mark Mooren, elaborated on the airline’s efforts to enhance connectivity between Amsterdam and Mexico.

The event also featured tailored tourist packages for Dutch travelers and highlighted investment opportunities in Mexico’s tourism sector. Strengthening Bilateral Tourism Cooperation Secretary Torruco participated in bilateral meetings with key Dutch tourism stakeholders, including Jos Vranken, Director General of the Netherlands Bureau of Tourism and Conventions (NBTC). They discussed strategies for promoting sustainable tourism and increasing travelers’ per capita spending while avoiding the pitfalls of mass tourism.

Meetings with TUI Nederland and Aeroméxico further underscored the commitment to enhancing air connectivity between the Netherlands and Mexico. Promoting Mexican Culture through Gastronomy As part of the visit, Secretary Torruco and Ambassador Moreno Toscano recognized chefs and restaurant owners for promoting traditional Mexican cuisine in the Netherlands. This initiative, part of the “Reconnecting with My Roots” program, emphasized the role of gastronomy in showcasing Mexico’s cultural richness.
