Hump day will largely be beautiful across Southern New England with the Greater Boston area seeing partly to mostly sunny skies. However, a unique setup could make for a stray shower or two later this afternoon in an environment where rain wouldn’t typically be a factor. A high-pressure air mass will descend into New England from the north and wedge a piece of energy into the weaker area of high pressure currently in place.

What does this mean? There will likely be increasing clouds this afternoon with the chance for a very quick, light shower. Though much of the activity should remain north and west of Boston, any rain will move in a north-to-south direction instead of a west-to-east direction. Out-the-door temperatures this morning will range between the mid to upper 60s — some folks may even opt for a light vest or a long sleeve shirt on their way to work.

As the day goes on, the northerly flow will keep temperatures stalled in the low 80s across Boston and a degree or two higher farther away from the coast. Advertisement Dew points will also stay low enough to enjoy a continued break from the muggy air we’ve seen so often this summer. Most will see dew points at or near 60 degrees today.

Looking ahead, the next few days will will be replicas of today today, with high pressure lingering and mixing with a few slivers of energy that could spark an isolated shower or two across the area. Humidity levels will stay pleasant for the work week until a system from the west arrives — plowing a warm front and southwesterly flow back into the region and bringing muggy conditions back into the area this weekend. Tropical Storm Ernesto will likely become a hurricane today, dumping heavy rain over Puerto Rico before turning north towards Bermuda.

The latest forecast cone shows Ernesto passing Bermuda as a Category 2 storm. An approaching cold front and northwest flow over New England later this week should prevent Ernesto from impacting New England directly — though high surf and rip currents are a likely bet this weekend. Southern New England: Mostly sunny skies to start the day with a few clouds building in the afternoon.

Daily highs to reach the low and mid 80s with relaxed winds. A stray shower may develop this afternoon but should be very isolated and moving quickly, limiting rain totals. Humidity levels will also say low, keeping the air comfortable.

Advertisement Western Mass.: Lots of sunshine. Morning temperatures are chilly across the Berkshires, starting the day in the mid to upper 50s.

Highs across Berkshire County will reach the upper 70s, while the valley could see temperatures warm to the low or mid 80s. Some building clouds in the afternoon with a few scattered showers, but not amounting to much. Otherwise, dew points and wind speeds stay low.

Cape and Islands: Mostly sunny with a few more clouds in the afternoon. A low chance for a passing shower as temperatures settle in the mid to upper 70s. Winds, even across the shorelines, should be relaxed and under 10 m.

p.h. Northern New England: A mix of sun and clouds as highs will likely reach the 80-degree mark for much of the three northern states.

A bit more shower activity is expected, especially across parts of New Hampshire and Maine in the afternoon, but totals should be relatively low — up to a quarter of an inch of rain for some communities, while others stay dry. Wind speeds should stay calm with comfortable humidity levels across the region. Ken Mahan can be reached at ken.
