THE Civic Centre in Suva was transformed into a vibrant celebration of the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival on Tuesday. The event, deeply rooted in Chinese tradition and culture, was organised by the Chinese community in Fiji and featured an array of mesmerising performances, creating a bridge of friendship between cultures. The Mid-Autumn Festival, celebrated on the 14th day of the 8th month of the traditional Chinese lunar calendar, is a time for family reunions and gratitude for the harvest.

This year, as the moon shone bright and full, families came together, whether physically or in spirit, to admire its beauty and partake in the age-old customs associated with the festival. The event at the Civic Centre was not only a celebration of Chinese heritage but also an invitation for the local community to engage in a shared cultural experience. Co-hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Fiji, the Chinese Cultural Centre, and the Department of Culture and Tourism of Hubei Province in China, the evening was part of the “Mid-Autumn Festival – A Moon to Remember” campaign, an initiative that aims to spread the festival’s message worldwide, emphasising themes of unity, gratitude, and the celebration of cultural diversity.

The evening’s program, titled “Experience Hubei’s Performance in Fiji – A Melodious Bridge of Friendship,” showcased both international and local talent, with 17 performers from Fiji. The array of performances included traditional dances, instrumental music, and acrobatics, all designed to highlight the rich cultural tapestry of China. One of the standout performances was the enchanting dragon boat Tune, delivered by female artist Ruan Guanghui, who is celebrated for her musical prowess.

The piece set the tone for the evening, evoking the spirit of the festival through melodic rhythms that resonated with the audience. This was followed by “A Myriad of Horses Galloping,” an instrumental ensemble featuring Wu Lingyun, a nationally recognised performer and gold medallist in the China National Instrumental Competition. The lively performance captivated the crowd, transporting them through sound to the vast landscapes of China.

Dance played a significant role in the celebration, with performances showcasing the elegance and diversity of Chinese culture. Dancers Peng Ziyu and Wang Rui Xue led the audience through a visual journey, bringing to life the stories and traditions of their homeland. Another highlight was the stunning acrobatic display, “STRENGTH,” performed by Hou Meng Yang and Bai Shi Yang, both of whom have garnered accolades at international competitions.

Their skill and precision left the audience in awe, illustrating the incredible discipline behind this ancient art form. The cultural exchange continued with a heartfelt performance by Hibiscus contestant Miss Fiji Fashion Week Pepe Malani, who covered the beloved song “Ave Maria.” Her soulful rendition added a touch of local flavour to the evening, bridging the gap between Chinese and Fijian cultures.

This moment symbolised the essence of the Mid-Autumn Festival—coming together in appreciation of one another’s traditions. The night was further enriched by a captivating magic show titled “Enhancing Handcrafts – Yearly Abundance,” performed by Wu Songtao, an internationally acclaimed magician. His tricks not only entertained but also engaged the audience in the wonder of craftsmanship and creativity.

The inclusion of magic in the program highlighted the festival’s theme of unity and celebration through diverse forms of art. As the evening progressed, the performances seamlessly flowed into one another, creating a tapestry of sound and movement that resonated deeply with attendees. The final acts included a rousing rendition of “CHINA IN THE LIGHTS,” featuring singers Yu Jingming and Hong Jingjing alongside other performers.

Their powerful voices echoed through the Civic Centre, leaving the audience with a sense of belonging and camaraderie. Throughout the evening, attendees were reminded of the festival’s deeper meaning. As the moon shone down on the celebration, it served as a symbol of family unity and gratitude for the harvest.

Even for those unable to be with their loved ones, the shared experience of admiring the same moon provided comfort, connecting hearts across distances. The atmosphere in the packed theatre was electric, filled with laughter, applause, and moments of reflection. Government representatives and community members mingled, celebrating not only the artistry on stage but also the bonds forged through cultural exchange.

This gathering of diverse cultures was a testament to the harmonious coexistence of different traditions in Fiji. The success of the Mid-Autumn Festival celebration at the Civic Centre underscores the importance of cultural festivals in promoting understanding and appreciation among different communities. By highlighting the rich traditions of the Chinese community in Fiji, the event fostered a sense of pride and belonging, reminding everyone of the shared values that bind us together.

As the night ended, the memory of the performances lingered in the air, a reminder of the beauty of cultural exchange and the friendship it nurtures. The event was more than just a celebration; it was a celebration of humanity—a night to remember, filled with joy, artistry, and the promise of continued friendship between cultures. In an increasingly interconnected world, events like these serve as vital reminders of the richness that diversity brings to our lives, making the Mid-Autumn Festival in Suva a truly unforgettable experience.
