Take it from someone who’s been shoved into his share of lockers: Sports and the arts aren’t always the best of friends. But every four years, the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympic Games force them to coexist under one roof, and I suddenly become a huge sports fan. I love the Opening Ceremonies for their central ethos of global goodwill.

I enjoy them for the massive performance of cooperation they represent. I soften at the little human stories and collective triumphs tucked into the procession. I crave the quadrennial geography lesson.
