Once again, we have been blessed with a year of life. And the time is at hand for New Year’s resolutions. We evaluate our circumstances and strive to make improvements in our lives.

Many of us focus on healthier lives, having better diets, losing weight, exercising more, keeping physically fit, learning through education, creating new relationships, changing jobs, and developing new skills. Some 4,000 years ago, the Babylonians are said to be the first humans to make New Year’s resolutions. Later, the Romans had a comparable custom when Julius Caesar established January 1st as the beginning of the new year.



The Roman deity, Janus, looked backward into the year past and ahead into the new year with promises of better behavior. Similarly, early Christians reflected on past mistakes and resolved to do better. We gardeners are no different.

We ponder past garden misadventures and anticipate horticultural advancements. I have selected three gardening resolutions for the New Year that have been stirring in my mind. You may also benefit from considering and implementing these simple resolutions.

Resolution One: To Improve and Enhance the Garden’s Soil. Soil is the medium for the various plants in our gardens. Success or failure as a gardener largely depends on your soil’s health.

Many things can be done to enrich your soil. Introducing organic materials will improve your garden. It isn’t necessary to buy organic additives; some are readily available at no cost other than y.
