“Ugliness is only skin deep” is just the top epidermal layer in Aaron Schimberg’s Kafkaesque fable “A Different Man.” An existential black comedy delivered with flair and a steady gaze — and two remarkable performances at its center — it mucks about in themes of identity and exploitation, perception and personality, fate and foolishness. It’s a variation on the old “be careful what you wish for” cautionary tale and a warning that we try to change who we are at our peril.

Even the title is a burst of bleak laughter in the dark..
