A massive 90s chart-topping singer known for ruling the air waves 30 years ago with a number one song still looks virtually the same in 2024. The iconic Whigfield , whose pop-tastic dance tune Saturday Night debuted at number one in 1994, has been the star attraction on the summer festival circuit. And rocking bold pink extensions in her hair, it seems like barely a couple of years have gone by for the 54-year-old Danish singer, songwriter and record producer – real name Sannie Charlotte Carlson – let alone 30.

Whigfield was also the big act for both Glasgow and Newcastle’ s Pride events in July, thanks to the colossal success of her debut single Saturday Night back in the 90s. It saw the unknown come straight in at the top spot in the UK chart, knocking off Wet Wet Wet’s Love Is All Around, which had been at number one for 15 straight weeks. Saturday Night also spawned its own dance routine which was cracked out at school discos and other musical events over the next decade – and beyond, even to today.

Singer Whigfield, who also had other hits with songs including Another Day, Think of You and Close to You, shared her excitement over performing at both events afterwards, declaring on Instagram: ‘What a Saturday!’ ‘Had the best time @glasgows_pride @barrowland_ballroom and @newcastlepride yesterday,’ she added in the caption. ‘Thanks for all the hard work behind the scenes and to the amazing party people who came to make the day special ❤️’ The star posted a few snaps from her busy weekend, including one with drag artist Miss Rory, which saw her in a pink top and thigh-high boots paired with a mini-skirt constructed from rainbow-coloured discs. For Glasgow’s show she also wowed, donning a silver bodysuit encrusted with crystals.

‘Looking wonderful as always ✨ Love your outfit and the colours,’ commented fan @gamerartisan, while @truecrazylion enthused: ‘You rock the pink hair!’ Whigfield has also been busy jetting around Europe this summer to make appearances for her thriving fanbase at Love the 90s in Marbella, Colours Community Festival at Whitehaven Harbour in Cumbria and The Lakeland Music Sessions Festival in Mullingar, Ireland. On Saturday night (fittingly), she opened the Alicante edition of Love the 90s. ‘Thank you so much @lovethe90s_official for letting me open the show tonight in #alicante,’ the singer posted on Instagram, alongside a video of her bopping around backstage in a pink dress and red boots.

‘And lots of kisses for all the 18,000 present yesterday. A great audience. I love you all,’ she added in Spanish in the caption.

Whigfield has previously amazed fans with her youthful looks, opening up in 2019 for Saturday Night’s 25th anniversary about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Appearing on TV show Lorraine, she was asked about the secret to looking young. ‘The secret is do everything different to what you did in the 90s.

I sleep every night at 10, I eat healthy and I exercise every day,’ she said. ‘I’m not a naughty girl anymore.’ More Trending 90s movie icon looks ageless almost 40 years after Oscar nomination for hit film The moment 90s rock god risked his life by climbing on stage scaffolding mid-performance 90s TV legend unrecognisable in new EastEnders role three decades on 90s indie legend makes incredible gesture for fans after gig cancelled Whigfield has continued to record music into the 2010s and 2020s, including under the names ‘Sannie’ and ‘Naan’.

In 2018, she had hopes of representing Denmark in Eurovision, but sadly she wasn’t chosen by her home nation. This article was first published on July 22. Got a story? If you’ve got a celebrity story, video or pictures get in touch with the Metro.
