Pune: A slew of measures to improve traffic conditions — including multiple underpasses , a bridge and the expansion of existing service roads — have been proposed in key areas along the accident-prone Katraj-Dehu Road Bypass. Union minister of road transport Nitin Gadkari , during his visit to the city last Saturday, gave in-principle approval to allocate Rs300 crore to execute these works. The projects are slated to take place in areas like Baner-Balewadi, Navale bridge and Bhumkar Chowk in an effort to reduce traffic chaos faced by commuters and streamline the movement of a rising vehicle population.

Earlier on Saturday, a joint meeting of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the traffic police was convened to suggest traffic mitigation measures, state cabinet minister and Kothrud MLA Chandrakant Patil told TOI. Major proposals include the construction of an underpass near Bhumkar Chowk, a cantilever bridge near Navale bridge, implementation of rotary traffic movement near Radha Chowk in Balewadi, and expansion of service roads at various locations, including Sus, Pashan, Sinhagad Road, and Navale bridge. Local residents and daily commuters in areas like Baner, Balewadi, Sus and Sinhagad Road, which are all located along the bypass, have for long lamented that the lack of proper road infrastructure on this route is causing them daily hardships.
