Stars like Lupita Nyong’o put representation at the core of their stories, while Madonna and Whoopi Goldberg wanted to write fun tales for little girls. In 2019, Nyong’o told Good Morning America that, as a child, she’d “thought that in order to make it into the pages of books, you had to be light”, she said. “It took a while for me to learn to love the skin I’m in,” she added.

The book features retellings of three classic children’s animal tales: The Tortoise and the Hare, Three Little Pigs and Country Mouse and City Mouse. Portman told Good Morning America she wanted to “[update] the morals of the story to be relatable to our time”.

Lil Nas X put his inimitable stamp on his book and scored 4.8 out of 5 stars on Amazon for his efforts.

Meghan Markle’s 2021 book release The Bench was dedicated to ‘the man and the boy who make my heart go pump-pump’ – referring to Prince Harry and her son Archie Lupita Nyong’o wants kids who look like her to love ‘the skin [they’re] in’ earlier than she did as a child through reading her book Sulwe, while Kevin Hart hopes young ones will pursue ‘big dreams’.
