MUMBAI: A collaborative survey by the Internet and Mobile Association of India ( IAMAI ) and Grant Thornton has shown that 47% of Mumbai's bus commuters are now using city travel apps to plan and book their journeys, signifying a significant shift towards digital convenience. The survey respondents highlighted various reasons for their preference: "While 26% of commuters emphasised the importance of a user-friendly interface, 27% prioritised access to up-to-date seat availability information over the app, 21% of respondents valued accurate real-time bus tracking using mobile apps, and 12% sought personalised tariff options which the app provided." However, the survey also revealed that 9% of users experienced app freezing or failure, and 5% found bus apps inconvenient to use.

According to the survey, the BEST has been leading this digital transformation, with its live tracking app garnering over 6 million downloads within two years of its launch. These apps provide numerous advantages to both commuters and bus operators, such as route optimisation, reduced operational inefficiencies, and increased profitability. The survey, which involved more than 1,400 participants, explores the awareness and usage of bus tracking features in mobile apps.

"By leveraging GPS technology and real-time data analysis, these apps enable users to track their buses, minimise waiting times, and optimise travel planning. This functionality enhances the visibility and reliability of bus services, increasing user confidence in public transportation and improving the overall user experience," the survey report stated. Dhruv Chopra, co-founder of Chalo Mobility Private Limited and IAMAI member, said, "The findings of the 'Connected Commutes 2024' survey underline the role of city travel apps in transforming urban bus travel , delivering substantial benefits to commuters, the environment, and the economy.

" He further added, "City travel apps have revolutionised the ticketing process with digital pass systems, offering users a seamless and contactless way to purchase and manage tickets. Transitioning from traditional paper-based tickets, digital passes provide hassle-free boarding and eliminate the need for cash transactions.".
