Pune: A 44-year-old woman was attacked by a leopard early on Monday in Junnar while she was sleeping in a sugar cane field. Mirabai Baru Barkade was sleeping outside a shepherd's tent in Waghdar village of Junnar when a leopard bit her arm. As she woke up screaming, the leopard scampered away, startled by her cries.

Barkade was admitted to a hospital in Narayangaon, where she was treated and discharged on Tuesday. Locals have demanded that the forest department install a cage in the village to catch the leopard. The incident also brought to light the dangers of ignoring protocol in a leopard-dense region.

The forest dept regularly conducts awareness programmes about the danger of sleeping in fields at night.
