Every Friday, our editors compile a trusty list of recommendations to answer the most pressing of questions: “Where should I eat?“ Here now are four places to check out this weekend in Los Angeles. And if you need some ideas on where to drink, here’s our list of the hottest places to get cocktails in town. For a Tokyo-style omakase splurge: Udatsu Sushi Los Angeles is home to an embarrassment of riches when it comes to high-end omakase experiences .

One of the newer places for expert nigiri is Udatsu, perched on the second floor above sister restaurant Rokusho on Sunset Boulevard. Before entering the sushi temple, pop into the complex’s outdoor bar for a well-prepared cocktail to start the evening; the Old Fashioned is especially balanced and potent. Then, enter Udatsu’s intimate space that allows for just a half-dozen diners each seating.

Chef Shingo Ogane deftly prepares a 17-plus course menu consisting mostly of nigiri interspersed with prepared dishes like steamed cod and simmered scallops. The omakase’s steady pacing, restrained yet vivid flavors and distinct personality take cues from the original Udatsu in Tokyo, which holds a Michelin star. 6634 Sunset Boulevard, 2nd Floor, Los Angeles, CA 90028.
