Pune: The Pune rural police on Tuesday claimed to have cracked 11 cases of temple thefts in Ambegaon, Shirur, Shikrapur, Ranjangaon, Khed and Ahmednagar since Feb this year. The crackdown started after the police arrested Vinayak Damu Jite (32), a resident of Kanhur Mesai village, and recovered stolen property worth Rs4 lakh from his possession. Jite executed a large number of temple thefts wearing a loincloth, the police said.

Superintendent of police Pankaj Deshmukh said, "Our team from the Pargaon police was investigating a theft at Bolhai Mata temple. While examining CCTV footage of the same, the investigators identified the man seen in the footage as Jite and started a search for him. Following a tip-off, our team nabbed Jite on July 31 from Shikrapur.



” The SP said, "Jite was previously arrested in cases of theft and robberies . He was in prison till his release on bail in Feb.” "He sold the silver jewellery to a jewellery store owner," Deshmukh said.
