Pune: The city traffic police have initiated an inquiry against officials from Chatushrungi, Shivajinagar and Warje divisions for employing fewer wardens to man vehicles’ movement than that on paper. These traffic divisions showed 25 to 100 extra wardens on paper. “We checked the wardens’ count physically across the city and found that these three traffic divisions had engaged fewer traffic wardens on roads, while the numbers were higher on papers.

We have initiated a probe against these traffic divisions for discrepancies,” said additional commissioner of police Manoj Patil. An officer of the rank of assistant commissioner of police is conducting the inquiry. “We want to know why there were very few traffic wardens on roads and the paper had more names,” Patil said.

The civic body, infrastructure companies and others provide wardens to man vehicular movement at the infrastructure work sites or at critical traffic junctions. The city traffic police are assisted by 800 traffic wardens. Ganeshkhind Road, Senapati Bapat Road, FC Road, JM Road and Shivaji Road are important thoroughfares under the jurisdiction of Chatushrungi and Shivajinagar traffic divisions.

They deploy a large number of traffic wardens at chowks, especially at university junction, Shimla Office junction and Agriculture College Chowk to avert traffic snarls. The Warje traffic division has Katraj-Dehu Road bypass and Karve Road under its jurisdiction. Traffic wardens are employed at Warje Chowk, Mutha bridge and other important junctions to avert traffic jams.
