Three people were rescued from the River Irwell by emergency services, yesterday evening. A huge emergency response was called to help two men and one woman who ended up in the water, near Blackburn Street in Radcliffe. Police responded to a "concern for welfare" call just after 8pm.

Five fire service crews and air support used specialist equipment to rescue the trio and two were taken to hospital. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 8pm last night (Monday 5 August 2024), we were called to reports of a concern for welfare on Blackburn Street in Radcliffe. "Officers attended and located two people in the River Irwell, they were rescued and taken to hospital for treatment.



"Their injuries are described as not life-changing or life-threatening, enquiries are ongoing." In a statement, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Shortly after 8.10pm yesterday (Monday 5 August), two fire engines from Bury and Broughton fire stations, one fire engine and the water incident unit from Heywood fire station, the technical response unit from Ashton fire station and the air support unit were called to Church Street West to reports of three people in the River Irwell.

“Crews arrived quickly and used specialist water rescue equipment including a short extension ladder to help two men and one woman in the water. “One man was transferred into the care of North West Ambulance Service and taken to hospital. Crews were in attendance for roughly one hour.
