Pune: A man, his brother and their female accomplice allegedly cheated a 56-year-old woman from Maval to the tune of Rs40 lakh on the pretext of helping her secure a liquor shop licence from Mantralaya. The woman lodged a complaint with the Talegaon Dabhade police against the trio on Sunday. The three people were charged under sections 318 (cheating) and 316 (criminal breach of trust) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Sub-inspector Bharat Ware of the Talegaon Dabhade police said the suspects contacted the woman in September 2019. They convinced her that they had good contacts with some officials in the state secretariat. "They told the woman that some liquor shop licences from the prohibition areas of Chandrapur district were due for transfer.

The trio assured the complainant they could help her obtain one of these licences. They collected Rs40 lakh from her," the officer said. The woman, despite repeated follow-ups, did not receive the liquor licence and demanded her money back.

"The trio told her that they were unable to return the money. They then told her that they would transfer the ownership of their flat in Satara in her name as compensation. The complainant, however, discovered that the flat documents were bogus," Ware said.

The victim then approached the police and lodgeda complaint. "Our investigations are on," he added..
