Award-winning dance festival Creamfields returns this weekend - and these brilliant photographs of when the event took place in Liverpool are bound to stir some memories. What began as an offshoot for the legendary Liverpool nightclub Cream, Creamfields is now the UK's leading dance festival, attracting thousands to Daresbury in Cheshire year after year. When the team behind Liverpool super club Cream decided to hold a music festival in the late 1990s, they couldn't have foreseen the behemoth that Creamfields would become and in its early days, the event was held in the city.

Starting in Winchester, Hampshire, the event was also held at the Old Liverpool Airfield in Speke from 1999 until 2005 before outgrowing the site and moving to Daresbury in 2006, where the festival has been held ever since. But these brilliant photographs, courtesy of our archives and beyond, captures moments at Creamfields when it was held in Speke. A number of images show preparations for the first Liverpool event in 1999 and work taking place behind the scenes 25 years ago.
