This is a banger to begin the season as a battle of reigning state champions take to Jerry Barker Stadium. The in a thriller against St. Charles while the Tigers knocked off fellow 318 foe Haynesville in the Non-Select Division IV affair.

Calvary is no stranger to scoring points, but will face a team that posted 60-plus on three occasions last season. Certainly could have used Calvary’s Week 2 matchup against Westgate, but this is one heck of a way to get things started. makes his District 1-5A debut.

Oh, did I mention the battle at Independence Stadium will come against the man – Raiders head coach, Stephen Dennis -- he worked under last season. Huntington – undeservedly – was overlooked in 2023. In addition to the attention District 1-5A and Calvary commanded, the Raiders were mired in a battle with teams in their league, like North DeSoto and Northwood.

However, the Raiders are with the big boys now. They proved they belonged last season with a . Now it’s time to take a shot at the largest school in the city.

Don’t laugh. This has the opportunity to be a big night for the gang in northern Bossier Parish. The Lions have lost every game – 25 straight – since a trip to Ringgold in 2021.

I’m not rooting against Ringgold, but it’s hard not to wish head coach Clint Walker and Plain Dealing get that winning feeling. Yet another opportunity to end a long losing streak. The Cowboys, who drop to District 1-4A this season, open 2024 with a Week 1 bye before they host the Class A Hornets.

Southwood has dropped 37 straight games (Week 9 victory vs. Parkway in 2019), but head coach Mike Green could have this squad 1-0 to begin this campaign. So, there is , as as the Buccaneers’ head coach last season.

However, now it’s the BFF Bowl. Parkway’s Coy Brotherton will face first-year head coach and between the pines. Sewell served as Brotherton’s offensive coordinator with the Panthers before he returned to his alma mater prior to the 2023 season.

Haughton’s fresh-faced coach is reflective of a program in a rebuilding mode. This game on the new turf offers a heck of an opportunity for a coming out party. The Rebels are looking to regain a spot among the state’s elite.

Here’s their chance. Griffins’ veteran quarterback Luke Delafield (he’s still only a junior, but is a two-time ) leads an incredibly portent and balanced offense. North DeSoto made the Superdome in 2022 and the state semifinals last season.

West Monroe wants to return as one of the state’s superpowers. And those fans travel. Stonewall will be rocking on this night.

The Soul Bowl, a Saturday affair, is a great way to end a stacked Week 3. The Giants’ head coach James Bradford Jr. got his first .

Green Oaks came up a little short, 12-6, but the Giants have won five of the last seven meetings. But with two wins in three attempts, are BTW head coach Gary Cooper and Co. beginning to take control of this series? Did I mention this will be the best halftime show you’ll see all season? Could this be a candidate for Game of the Year? There are so many unknowns on the Eagles’ side, but so much potential.

We know Airline is loaded – there is little doubt the Vikings’ offense will run like a machine. Evangel quarterback has been hyped as much as any young quarterback in recent years, but this would be – at the most – just his fourth high school start. And he’s not the only new face on Broadacres Road.

Will the Eagles, back in District 1-5A, work out the kinks by Week 4? Will the provide immediate help? If both answers are yes, prepare for fireworks at M.D. Ray Field.

We don’t have to wait long for this rivalry game anymore. The Griffins ended a three-game losing streak in the series with a last season. They had the advantage in terms of experience at quarterback with Delafield, but the Falcons are primed to recover after their first losing season since 2016.

With Huntington and Evangel departed to 5A, there is a great chance this game will determine the District 1-4A champion. Surely this game is circled on the Vikings’ revenge tour. The Gators provided the lone last season.

Vikings quarterback Ben Taylor -- the in 2023 -- and Co. were held “in check,” scoring just 35 points. Only Parkway (33) held Airline to fewer last season.

Now, a lot of the same offensive weapons are back for the Vikings, while Captain Shreve’s defensive unit is loaded, too. A must-watch showdown between two of the most hyped sophomore quarterbacks in the state. The Tigers will be armed with 6-foot-3, 195-pound Malachi Ziegler, whose already garned double digit offers, including Ole Miss, Oklahoma State and Arkansas.

Meanwhile, the Eagles' 6-foot, 196-pounder, Peyton "Pop" Houston, has brought NIL to the high school level. He in the offseason and also has big-time offers, including Oklahoma, Texas and Miami. However, forget the hype on both sides, the scoreboard will be the only thing that matters on this evening.

When was the last time the Cavaliers were tested within their district (they haven’t lost since 2012)? They face a second reigning state champion as the road to a league title got a lot tougher with this year’s realignment. This battle against the Non-Select Division III state champs will determine the 1-2A winner. According to Charlie Cavell’s wonderful Byrd Football Record Book, we have to wait until Week 10 for the battle of City supremacy for the first time since 1998.

No matter what is on the line in terms of the postseason, this matchup is perfect for the regular-season finale. The Gators ended a three-game losing streak in the series with a . Thankfully, this 1-5A Thursday night showdown moves back to Lee Hedges.
