Pune: Two students of a residential school died on Monday — one drowned in the Indrayani at Tapkir Vasti in Moshi and another at a hospital in Pimpri while undergoing treatment after rescuing two of his schoolmates from drowning in the river. The Pimpri Chinchwad fire brigade are searching for another student, swept away by the river waters. A source said Jay Dayma (19), hailing from Nashik, was declared dead at the Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCMH) in Pimpri at night.

Dilip Gaikwad, an officer from the Pimpri Chinchwad fire brigade, told TOI, “We recovered the body of Omkar Pathak (16), who hailed from Latur, in the afternoon.” Mahesh Nande, a teacher from the Maharshi Vedavyas Pratishthan's Vedashree Tapovan in Moshi, said 55 students from the school had reached the riverbanks around 8.30am to perform rituals on the occasion of Shravan Pournima.

“All the students were in a queue. We do not know how one of them came running and fell into the river waters,” Nande, who was at the spot, said. He said seeing that student drowning, another jumped into the river.

“As the first student held him, both started drowning. To save the duo, three more students jumped into the river. Unfortunately, two of them started drowning,” he said.

Nande said Dayma, the student declared dead at the hospital, rescued them. “While rescuing them, Dayma ran out of breath. We immediately sent him to YCMH in Pimpri,” he said.

Fire officer Gautam Ingawale of the Pimpri Chinchwad fire brigade said, “Searches were stopped in the evening because of rain and poor light. We will resume the operation on Tuesday morning.” We also published the following articles recently 15-year-old boy found dead in Kalu river after drowning A 15-year-old boy, Tushar Choraghe, was found dead in the Kalu River in Titwala after drowning while swimming with friends.
