Thousands of people across Merseyside have enjoyed impressive bonfire and firework displays this evening. Bonfire Night, or Guy Fawkes Night, has a long history and marks the anniversary of the failure of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605. In more recent years, huge bonfire displays have become incredibly popular.

Tonight, Tuesday November 5, thousands witnessed beautiful displays across the region, including Woodchurch, Birkenhead north end, Toxteth and Seaforth. Some bonfires took over a month to build. In Woodchurch, organisers Kirk from Kirk Superior Paving, Lee Mathie and "all the lads from the community" came together to build the "biggest and best" bonfire the area has seen.

The event was accompanied by burgers, hot dogs, fireworks and music for people to enjoy. Below are 17 brilliant photos of firework displays across Merseyside.
