Vadodara: A 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped in the presence of her male friend in the newly developing Bhayli area late on Friday night. Around midnight, five people on two bikes spotted the girl and her friend sitting by the roadside and took advantage of the poor illumination on the road. They started making lewd comments and jeered at the duo.

When the girl's friend objected to their obscenity, a quarrel broke out. "Three of them dismounted from the two-wheelers, and one of them restrained the boy while two others held the girl. Seeing this, two from the group sped away on one of the two-wheelers.

Thereafter, one of the three caught hold of the boy while two others took turns to rape her at the same spot," Vadodara district superintendent of police (SP) Rohan Anand told reporters. The trio fled the scene at around 12:30am. Even though the area is developing fast, there are very few streetlights, and the traffic is also sparse despite the Navratri festivities.

The girl went home after this and narrated the ordeal to her parents. They initially approached the city police, but it was revealed that the location of the crime fell under the jurisdiction of the Vadodara taluka police station of the rural police, which began the investigation. Anand said that the girl and the boy were unable to see the accused properly as it was dark.

After identifying the crime scene, the area was cordoned off, and a forensic team and police began collecting evidence on Saturday morning.
