Pune: A 16-year-old student of a Vedic school drowned in the Nira River at Nira Narsingpur village in Indapur taluka , about 175km from Pune, during Ganapati immersion around 3pm on Tuesday. "The body of the victim, Ankit Vinayak Kulkarni of Paranda in Dharashiv district, was traced during a search operation on Wednesday morning," inspector Suryakant Kokane of the Indapur police said. He said on Tuesday, the victim, along with 15 other students of the school, had gone to immerse the Ganapati idol in the Nira River.

"While entering the water, he slipped and drowned. The victim did not know how to swim," the officer said. Kokane said the local administration and police reached the spot and carried out searches.



"We used local divers to trace the boy. But, he could not be traced till late in the evening," he said. The officer said on Wednesday, the teams again began the search.

"The divers found the body and brought it out. After the post-mortem, the body was handed over to the relatives of the boy," he said. Kokane said the police have registered a case of accidental death.

"Our investigations are on," Kokane said. Nira Narsingpur village is also known for the Shri Laxmi Narsinha temple, which is situated near the confluence of the Bhima and Nira rivers. "For six years, the victim was a student of a Vedic school in the Nira Narsingpur village," Kokane said.
