Founded by internationally recognized artist Cassius Khan, the festival is a heartfelt tribute to his guru, the late Mushtari Begum. Begum was an iconic figure who introduced the art of classical ghazal (a form of poetry in rhyming couplets) to Vancouver. Known as the “queen of ghazal,” Begum has left a legacy that lives on through this festival, which brings to life the beauty and depth of Indian classical traditions.

Expect performances from artists, including Khan and artistic director Amika Kushwaha, whose talents in ghazal, tabla, and kathak have become increasingly rare. The festival will also welcome special guests, including Pandit Salil Bhatt, who will be performing on the satvik veena, singer Dr. Kamaljeet Gill, the Qiyam Brothers, and Mateen and Mobeen, with their instruments of the harmonium and rabab.

Attendees can also hear ghazal translations by Coach Ram Nayyar and Ashifa Tharani, ensuring a fully accessible experience. Mushtari Begum Festival 2024 When: September 28, 7pm Where: Massey Theatre (735 8th Avenue, New Westminster) Admission: $20+; available here ; children under 12 get in free.
