The Malawi Film Festival returns with its third edition at Golden Peacock in Lilongwe with 38 films set to be screened. Festival Coordinator Phil Kuipa said on Wednesday that they were set for the festival, that is running under the theme ‘Embracing Malawian Culture through Films’, from November 29 to 30 2024. “We are almost there, in terms of preparations, although we are still in need of more support.
We are grateful to partners such as MultiChoice Malawi and Old Mutual, who have come in to support us,” Kuipa said. He said apart from the awards, which are there to recognise the works of the players in the industry, they will have workshops. “MultiChoice Malawi is on top of the bill in creating a platform that will drill creatives on issues to do with piracy which is critical.
Piracy, is rampant but there is a need to understand it better and see how players can benefit,” Kuipa said. He said Old Mutual is part of a campaign that seeks to encourage creatives to make money from their sweat. The playwright said the budget for this year’s festival is K21 million.
“We have both short and feature films as well as local and international films. We just want to call upon movie lovers to take time and be part of this festival,” he said..
