A number of people have voiced their surprise after an expert shared the "best" way to store a number of common vegetables. A video shared by consumer champion platform Which? on Instagram has explained that certain veggies thrive in different conditions to others. Their expert explains that some vegetables seem to "go off so quickly" due to "ripening, environmental factors, and packaging".

For example, according to Amcor, a cucumber wrapped in plastic packaging will last for about 14 days, compared to five days when unwrapped. Which?'s expert adds that carrots and broccoli also last longer when in plastic packaging, but that an opposite effect is found in other vegetables. Leafy greens, such as lettuce, should be kept in "perforated bags or wrapped in damp paper towels", while mushrooms and tomatoes should never be kept in plastic.

A post shared by Which? (@whichuk) The same applies, the expert said, for root vegetables such as potatoes and onions, which should be kept "completely out of plastic as it traps moisture and leads to sprouting or mould". Reacting to the video in the comments section, one Instagram user said: "Did not know this!" A second said: "I disagree with carrots" and a third added: "Always kept potatoes in the bags [grimace emoji]". A fourth added: "There has to be something other than plastic we can use".
