Glamis Castle Angus DD8 1DJ Glamis Castle has been home to the Earls of Strathmore since 1372 and over the centuries it has welcomed many significant figures in Scottish history, including Mary Queen of Scots; James Stuart, the ‘Old Pretender’, Sir Walter Scott and the Queen Mother, for whom Glamis was her family home. It is a place steeped in history, set within fertile Strathmore and with, in the background, the Angus glens reaching high into the Cairngorms. Today the garden is open to everyone and last year 118,000 people passed through the gates to explore the estate, the castle and the gardens that surround it.
Kitchen Garden at Glamis Castle (Image: unknown) The Kitchen Garden covers four acres and is intensively cultivated, with space for fruit and vegetables and for flowers, all set around a striking stone fountain. Food from here goes to the Castle Kitchen Restaurant and in season pickings can include asparagus, apples, carrots and rhubarb, as well as the raspberries and strawberries for which this part of the world is renowned. Also served up in the castle’s restaurant, is venison and soon beef from the wider estate.
This is part of Glamis’ commitment to locally grown produce and throughout 2025 an exhibition, Sustaining Glamis Castle, focuses on the work involved in preserving this historic landmark, including its gardens. Meanwhile the castle’s archivist, Ingrid Thomson has collated a first edition cookbook called ‘Glamis Castle Recipes and Remedies..
