Though JFK's assassination in 1963 rocked the world, the Kennedy family had already endured two heartbreaking losses years before he died. Joseph Patrick Kennedy Jr., nicknamed 'Joe', was the eldest child of Joseph and Rose Kennedy's nine children and named after his father. Joe became a US Navy lieutenant, and planned to run for the US House of Representatives in 1946 after his military service, with the presidency his ultimate goal — his father having groomed him for the role.
