Taunton Town are now six games without a win as the Southern League Premier South season enters the final stretch. The Peacocks’ latest result was a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Walton & Hersham at the Cygnet Health Care Stadium on Saturday (March 22). Taunton had taken the lead through an own goal, but the visitors extended their unbeaten run to 14 games with goals late in the first half.

Town came into the game having made a couple changes from the side that drew with Marlow away from home as Eddie Jones and Alfie Moulden came into the side for Ollie Woodhouse – sent off at Marlow – and Harris Feltham. New signing Ryan Cainey had a place on the bench. The home side made the faster start as captain Tom Smith heading over five minutes into the game.

Then on 12 minutes the Peacocks took the lead in bizarre fashion as a long clearance by goalkeeper Josh Gould was headed up into the air by one of the Walton & Hersham defenders and it looped over the goalkeeper into the net. This gave the home side a shot of confidence and on 20 minutes Owen Brain found a yard of space in the penalty area but saw his shot go wide. A few minutes later Brain had another chance which was spurned.

Taunton got a warning for what was to come on 39 minutes as their woodwork was struck. Then on 43 minutes Walton & Hersham scored their equaliser following intricate play around the Taunton Town penalty area. The visitors added a second in stoppage time at the end of the first half as a through ball spl.
