Mumbai: Every year, March 23 is observed as Shaheed Diwas (Martyrs’ Day) in India to honour the brave sons of the nation who sacrificed their lives for the country’s independence. On this day, the martyrs, revolutionaries, and freedom fighters who resisted British rule are remembered with deep respect. The observance of this day is closely linked to India’s history under colonial rule.

The British ruled India for many years. However, when the demand for independence gained momentum, the brave sons of India strongly opposed British rule. A wave of rebellion swept the nation, and people from almost every household joined the struggle for freedom.

Among these revolutionaries, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev fiercely opposed British rule. In their fight for independence, they made their voices heard across the country, even at the cost of imprisonment. 1928 : Bhagat Singh and his comrades assassinated a British police officer who was responsible for the death of Lala Lajpat Rai during a brutal lathi charge.

1929 : Bhagat Singh and his associate threw bombs in the Central Legislative Assembly , shouting slogans of ‘ Inquilab Zindabad.
