Retailers have been hit by a tough start to 2025, facing what appears to be a relentless spate of store closures month after month. According to the latest figures released in February by the Centre for Retail Research, 206 stores and 1,233 employees are feeling the impact from seven "failing businesses", with household names like Homebase, Beales, Select Fashion, and Quiz Clothing included in the list. While some brands continue their online operations or strive for considerable overhauls, their high street footprint is significantly shrinking.

As we move into April, this unwelcome trend seems set to carry on, with numerous brands getting ready to close down some of their branches. Bricks-and-mortar shops on the high street face stiff competition from e-commerce sites, and when combined with hefty commercial rents and faltering consumer spending, maintaining flagship outlets is becoming an increasingly tough battle.
